The Motorized Avalanche Skills Training Level 3 course is designed for experienced snowmobile and snow bike riders. Riders that are ready to take on a backcountry leadership role. This course goes beyond personal decision-making. It teaches you how to lead crews and manage real-time hazards.
You will learn to interpret variable snowpack layers. Navigate complex avalanche terrain with confidence. If you’ve completed M.A.S.T 2 or 2+, and you are eager to become a backcountry leader, this motorized avalanche course is for you. It supports you in reaching that goal.
Who Should Attend
This motorized avalanche course is built for experienced snowmobile and snow bike riders who have completed M.A.S.T. 2 or 2+ and feel confident in their current backcountry skills.
If you’re riding regularly in challenging and complex avalanche terrain. If you are finding yourself stepping into a leadership role, this course is designed for you.
You’ll dial in your trip planning and sharpen your ability to assess snowpack and avalanche hazard in real time. Learn how to lead your crew with clarity and confidence.. M.A.S.T. 3 is your next move as a recreational rider.
If it’s been three seasons or more since your last avalanche course, consider our M.A.S.T. 3+ option—it includes a full extra day of hands-on review to get you back up to speed.
This course is for you if:
- You’ve recently completed a M.A.S.T. 2 or 2+ course (within the past 24 months)
- You have strong avalanche knowledge and field habits, and are ready for leadership-level training
- You’re comfortable traveling in complex avalanche terrain on a snowmobile or snow bike
- You want to lead group trips, manage avalanche hazards in complex terrain in real time. Taking your backcountry decision-making to the next level
This is the last step in recreational motorized specific avalanche training. It is a custom-built course designed for riders by riders. It is delivered by industry leading professionals.
What You’ll Learn
The Motorized Avalanche Skills Training Level 3 course is delivered in two separate modules. The first module is at the start of the season. The second module is toward the end.
This schedule gives snowmobile and snow bike riders time to apply what they’ve learned through real riding experience. This six-day motorized avalanche course is for riders stepping into a recreational backcountry leadership roles.
You will learn:
- Lead avalanche terrain travel in complex, critical decision making situations
- Analyze and interpret snowpack layers and persistent weak structures
- Plan and execute daily missions using weather and bulletin data
- Direct group management, energy flow, and safe travel strategies
- Coordinate realistic multi-victim rescue scenarios
- Make smart decisions under pressure using proven frameworks
- Apply leadership skills through communication, observation, and track setting
- Master clear communication using radios, GPS devices, and face-to-face coordination
Use your own riding days as practice grounds. Complete structured homework assignments. Attend two scheduled live TEAMS check-ins between modules.
These activities will reinforce learning and prep for the next phase. Have direct access to your instructor between modules for questions, coaching, and ongoing mentorship

Upon registration, students receive a free code for Motorized Avalanche Online Learning Level 1. It’s optional, but a great way to refresh your foundation before starting M.A.S.T. 3.
M.A.S.T level 3 courses require a minimum of 3 students with a maximum of 5 students for custom bookings. If we travel outside of Revelstoke/ Sicamous, BC, the minimum student numbers change. The price per person will also change.

Canadian Motorized Backcountry Guides Association
We are an association committed to advancing the professionalism, qualifications, and training of snowmobile and snow bike professionals. We offer industry-leading training and assessment. Our focus is on the highest standards of risk management and field competency for aspiring and active guides and instructors. Our team develops a clear matrix of qualifications and skill sets for motorized backcountry guide certification. We offer a platform to evaluate these qualifications on an individual basis.
The Canadian Avalanche Association
The Canadian Avalanche Association is a good next step. It is ideal if you are interested in working in the avalanche patch. It is also suitable if you have just become fascinated by snow science. Avalanche Operations Level 1 is a 1-week course. It focuses on developing students’ knowledge about snowpack science and documentation. It molds students to enter the avalanche industry.
